Urocyon cinereoargenteus

Gray Fox Searching

I have begun the weaning

but the den keeps caving in.

All my little restless ones—

their kneading, kicking, suffered

breathing—melt our molten walls.

Papa’s stalking nights and days,

but mice are scarce and meaty reeds

barely stave the hunger. So, I keep digging,

digging daily, but who knows when

it's enough. Who knows when it's enough.
